Personal ‘soft’ skills

There are some general personal skills required to help build a company.

What are personal skills for entrepreneurs? Personal skills are the characteristics that are typical for successful entrepreneurs, such as risk tolerance and persistence. More general personal skills among entrepreneurs are: optimism, desire for control, initiative and resilience.

Why are personal skills so important in entrepreneurship? Faced with the arbitrary challenges of a start-up, entrepreneurs need skills that relate to their personality. In addition to the ‘hard’, concrete skills of any industry, the essence of entrepreneurship and leadership is the ‘soft’ skills that relate to emotional intelligence.

How do you acquire personal skills? Skills are developed through several stages: novice, competence, proficiency, expertise and mastery.

“Hire character. Train skill.” – Peter Schultz, inventor, entrepreneur.

When are personal skills useful? Personal skills are useful when performing tasks that involve interacting with people in an organisation and other stakeholders. Entrepreneur’s personal skills are important to the success of an organization, particularly for customer interaction.

Who has the most developed personal skills? Leaders who have the ability to read their own and other’s emotions use this skill to guide solutions and decisions. Leaders who are too sensitive to other’s emotions may have difficulty making decisions..

Where do you find people with high personal skills? Personal skills predict performance best in roles that require a high degree of emotional labour. Entrepreneurship is an example of where emotional intelligence have an impact. Entrepreneurs tend to be exceedingly positive and resilient.

I am working hard to improve some of my personal skills. The jury is still out.

Have you any stories about wanting to excel in some personal skills and actually pulling it off?
