Practical skills for founders

Having and executing practical skills as an entrepreneur will strengthen your business.

What are practical entrepreneurial skills? Starting a business, it's essential to have the skills that will serve your objectives. The main practical skills are communication, organisation, team building and innovation.

Why do entrepreneurs need practical skills? Entrepreneurs need the practical skills and knowledge to produce goods or services effectively, and to run a company. The founder or founders will meet a plethora of obstacles, which are impossible to control without significant practical skills.

How do entrepreneurs develop practical skills? Practical skills are strengthened by exercise. While some aspects may be learned through media or materials, the most effective learning happens by observing and executing.

“You must either modify your dreams or magnify your skills.” – Jim Rohn, Entrepreneur, author

When are practical skills critical? Entrepreneurial-minded people are not necessarily proficient in communicating, delegation, spotting talent and focus and concentration. At all stages of a company’s development, the entrepreneur’s practical skills are critical for the company to grow and not stagnate and diminish.

Who has practical skills? An entrepreneur may have the skill, but he may not necessarily know its significance or how to apply it in the face of certain challenges. People who have multiple intelligences, for example in visual, logical, interpersonal and linguistics, may score high on practical skills.

Where do you get practical skills? People with hands-on experience from as many levels and sectors as possible in work-life, have the most practical skills for starting a new business. Curious people who expose themselves to different kinds of experiences will gain practical skills from everywhere. The most important skills for entrepreneurship may be attained through on-the-job learning.

The holes in my practical skills portfolio are glaring…or rather more like dark matter. I know what they are and focus my attention elsewhere – on my talents.

What practical skills have been most useful in your entrepreneurial venture?
